GLENDINE

South African Artist, Born in 1966.

For over three decades, this South African artist has been deeply engaged in the world of fine art. Raised in Namibia, her creative journey began in childhood, painting alongside her grandmother, Zizi—the wife of acclaimed poet DJ Opperman. After studying fine art at Pretoria Technikon, she developed a distinctive body of work rooted in the South African landscape, particularly through her evocative Karoo Landscapes, Karoo Madonnas, and intricate still lifes.

Her experience as a single mother of two sons significantly influenced the feminist themes in her work. The Karoo Madonna series and still lifes celebrate the strength and quiet resilience of women, shaped by her personal journey and the challenges of motherhood.

Spending 15 years in the Klein Karoo, she drew deep inspiration from its arid beauty—rugged terrain, old houses, windmills, and expansive night skies—all of which imbued her art with a powerful sense of place and solitude.

In 2011, the tragic loss of her eldest son in a car accident profoundly impacted her work. This period marked a turning point, bringing emotional depth and vulnerability into her art as she moved away from commercial expectations and embraced a more raw, authentic expression.

Now based in Cape Town, she continues to evolve artistically, exploring bold abstraction, vibrant color, and multimedia techniques. Despite these shifts, her bond with the Karoo landscape endures. Her art remains both personal and resonant—interweaving themes of womanhood, loss, and the enduring power of place.
