Sound Asleep

by Olaug Vethal

The watercolour painting captures a serene and intimate moment of a man in deep sleep, rendered with soft, earthy tones that evoke a sense of calm and tranquility. The figure is delicately outlined in warm shades of ochre, sienna, and raw umber, the gentle washes of these earthy colours reflecting the quiet repose of the human form. The soft contours of the man’s body, relaxed and at peace, are accentuated by the fluid transitions between light and shadow, suggesting the natural curves and rhythms of sleep. Behind him, the backdrop is a wash of cool blue, providing a soothing contrast to the warmth of the figure and creating a sense of distance, as if the man is nestled in a dreamlike space between earth and sky. The blending of these colours enhances the contemplative mood of the piece, drawing the viewer into a moment of stillness and quietude.
