Life in Death explores the intricate balance between beginnings and endings, using the microscopic world as a metaphor for the perpetual cycle of existence. This abstract piece depicts frenzied clusters of cells or bacteria, rendered in stark black and white, suggesting both the vitality of life and the inevitability of its end.

Gouache creates dynamic contrasts and fluid shapes, evoking the motion and energy of living organisms caught in a chaotic dance. Drops of wax punctuate the composition, adding dimensionality and texture. The monochromatic palette emphasizes the duality of creation and decay, vitality and stillness, and the delicate interplay between the two.

This work invites the viewer to reflect on the interconnectedness of life and death—a reminder that even in endings, there is a foundation for beginnings. The piece pulses with energy, challenging us to embrace the beauty in life’s impermanence.

Born in 1989, Jessica DeMers graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2011. She then embarked on a journey of exploration, discovering various cultures to feed her creativity. DeMers’ artistic journey is one of diversity and experimentation. Her work, showcased nationally, weaves together elements of realism and abstraction, each piece telling a unique story. Through realism, she captures the essence of human resilience, celebrating the strength found in vulnerability. Simultaneously, her work in abstraction reflects the complexity and fluidity of human experience, inviting viewers to explore the realms of imagination and emotion. Drawing inspiration from her travels and encounters, DeMers employs a variety of materials and techniques in her mixed media creations. Each artwork is a testament to her eclectic approach. In 2021, DeMers found a new home in Malta. Embracing her newfound surroundings, she embarked on a journey of artistic discovery, immersing herself in the local art scene. An emerging artist on the international stage, DeMers has garnered recognition for her distinctive style and poignant storytelling. From a transformative two-week residency in Gozo to numerous group exhibitions, her artistic trajectory continues to ascend. Now, poised to captivate audiences with her solo exhibition at Il-Kamra ta’Fuq this December, DeMers stands at the threshold. Through her evocative creations, she invites viewers to embark on a journey of introspection.
