In Seascape 3, Olaug Vethal transforms the coastal landscape into a turbulent field of colour, movement and sensation. Sweeping blues and violets dominate the sky and sea, while flashes of yellow, green and pink anchor the land below. The horizon becomes unstable, allowing earth, water and atmosphere to flow into one another.

Rather than describing a particular place, Vethal appears to paint the experience and energy of the landscape. Her gestural marks suggest forces that lie beneath its visible surface: wind, water, light and continual transformation.

Within Vethal’s metaphysical world, Seascape 3 becomes a meeting point between the material and the unseen. Nature is presented not as fixed scenery but as a living, shifting presence. The landscape seems caught between states, offering a glimpse of a world in which physical reality and something more elusive briefly overlap.

This work is currently hung at Spazju A, Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta until 25th October 2026 as part of the exhibition ‘Beyond The Visible | The Metaphysical Worlds of Olaug Vethal, curated by Christine Xuereb and in collaboration with Christine X Art Gallery
