by Olaug Vethal
In Seascape 2, Olaug Vethal transforms the sea from an observed landscape into an intensely emotional and metaphysical space. Sweeping strokes of blue, pink, white and red move across the surface, dissolving distinctions between sea, sky and horizon. This energetic, spontaneous handling of paint is characteristic of Vethal’s desire to capture not simply appearance, but the spirit and energy of her subject.
The landscape therefore becomes less a depiction of a particular place than an experience of constant movement and transformation. Land remains only tentatively anchored at the edges, while the centre seems to open into an expansive, almost limitless space.
Within Vethal’s metaphysical world, the sea becomes a threshold between the visible and the unknowable. Its shifting surface suggests something beyond physical landscape, a space of memory, emotion and consciousness in which boundaries dissolve. Seascape 2 captures the world not as something fixed, but as something perpetually becoming.
This work is currently hung at Spazju A, Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta until 25th October 2026 as part of the exhibition ‘Beyond The Visible | The Metaphysical Worlds of Olaug Vethal, curated by Christine Xuereb and in collaboration with Christine X Art Gallery
