Beyond Form

In Beyond Form, Olaug Vethal transforms the sea through expressive colour and gesture. Waves, rocks and shoreline remain recognisable, yet their forms continually dissolve into sweeping strokes of colour. The horizon offers a moment of stillness against the restless movement below.

Within Beyond the Visible, the sea becomes more than a landscape. Constantly shifting and impossible to hold in a single form, it suggests the boundary between the tangible and intangible. Vethal moves beyond observation towards sensation and perception, where the external landscape becomes an inner experience.

Beyond Form asks us to look beyond what the sea is, towards what it evokes: movement, memory, impermanence and the continual transformation of the visible world.

This work is currently hung at Spazju A, Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta until 25th October 2026 as part of the exhibition ‘Beyond The Visible | The Metaphysical Worlds of Olaug Vethal, curated by Christine Xuereb and in collaboration with Christine X Art Gallery
