Beyond the Visible: The Metaphysical Worlds of Olaug Vethal celebrates the life and artistic legacy of Olaug Vethal (1946–2007), the Norwegian-born artist who made Malta her home and became an influential figure within the island’s artistic community. Bringing together works spanning landscape, portraiture, jazz, the human body, Malta’s ancient sites and encounters with Japanese visual culture, the exhibition explores Vethal’s enduring fascination with the metaphysical dimensions of existence.

Throughout her practice, Vethal moved beyond the appearance of things towards something less tangible: energy, memory, consciousness and presence. Through intuitive forms, symbolic imagery and expressive colour, bodies merge with surrounding space, landscapes become inner states, sound becomes gesture, and ancient stones appear to hold traces of absent lives. From the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and the Malta Jazz Festival to the Maltese sea, self-portraiture and artistic dialogues with Caravaggio, Utagawa Kunisada and Kitagawa Utamaro, the visible world repeatedly becomes a point of departure for an exploration of what might exist beyond physical appearance. Vethal was also a deeply influential teacher and mentor. Through her teaching, she encouraged generations of students to approach art through experimentation, observation and personal expression, leaving a lasting imprint on Malta’s artistic community.

Curated by Christine Xuereb, Beyond the Visible brings these different strands of Vethal’s practice together, revealing an artist whose work continually crossed boundaries: between body and spirit, landscape and consciousness, sound and image, the ancient and the contemporary. More than a retrospective, the exhibition is an invitation to encounter Vethal’s work as a search for what cannot easily be seen or named. Beyond the Visible invites us not simply to look at the world, but to sense what might lie beyond it. We invite you to visit the show taking place at Spazju A, Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta from Friday 4 September – Sunday 25 October 2026.
