Ethiopian Artist, born in 1994 (1986 Ethiopian Calendar).
Tiemar Tegene’s works are anchored in her training as a printmaker having studied and received a BFA in Printmaking at the Allee School of Fine Arts and Design in Addis Ababa. She expands etching processes into mono-printing through spontaneous experiments and adding coloured pencil to repeat icons and patterns, whilst adding layers of personal narratives.
Tegene’s compositions are transmutations of her emotional experiences and reflections of her relationships with others. The details in her images convey echoes of stories heard by Tegene or drawn from song lyrics or film. Integrating details from reality with flourishes of imagination, her portraits evoke specific and consuming universal emotional moments.
Tiemar was represented by Circle Art Gallery at the 1-54 leading African Art Fair London in October 2023 following her solo exhibition at this gallery in September where she was also previously featured in the group exhibition Fictions in 2022 and Addis Contemporary II in 2021. Besides her work being exhibited at the National
Museum of Ethiopia, Alliance Ethio-Francaise and at Gebre Kristos Desta Centre in Ethiopia, she was commissioned a series of public murals in Addis Ababa. Internationally, besides her representation in Kenya, she has had her work shown at the Lithuanian National Museum of Art and at James Fuentes Gallery in New York.
