DANIELA ATTARD (lella)

Maltese Artist, Born in 1989

Visual artist and designer from Birzebbugia, Malta. Active internationally and based in London, UK.

Iella started drawing as a teenager, inspired by online games from the early 2000s. She switched from a science degree at the University of Malta and completed a BA in Art History instead. While attending life drawing classes at the Society of Arts under the mentorship of Eman Grima, she began painting graffiti in the Msida skatepark. These early experiences helped shape her unique visual style of illustration that she is recognised for today.

In 2012, seeking international opportunities and training, Iella moved to London, UK, where she completed an MA in Communication Design at Kingston University.
Soon after, Iella was hired by Cartoon Network to work in-house as a designer and illustrator. She worked on various projects, particularly in consumer products, with clients such as Doc Martens, H&M, McDonalds, Inglot and Primark. Later, she did visualisation and storyboarding for Warner Brothers Theatrical before leaving in August 2023 to pursue a freelance career and focus on drawing-based fine art practice.

During the pandemic, Iella started shifting focus and had her first solo exhibition at Hoxton 253 (now SKT Spaces) in 2021, followed by solo shows in Malta and Australia.
Iella‘s work is influenced by 90s animation, video games and nature. Most of her work is figurative and illustrative, often exploring themes of fantasy, climate change, existentialism and personal experiences. She is an avid sketchbook keeper and life drawing enthusiast.
