Artist participating in 20 x 20 Exhibition: Edition 2
Desmond took early retirement to pursue his art career, a member at Pallas studios where he exhibited as well as at Graphic Studio in Dublin where he served on the board. He has had residencies in the Prince of Wales Drawing Studio in London and at the Draiocht Arts Centre in Dublin, with solo shows and group shows at various other spaces. With works of his held in the OPW collection as well as at many county council art collections, this year he was awarded the Peoples Award in the Fingal Development Plan.
His working process is based on following the elemental impulse children employ when making art. His art practice for thirty five years was figuratively based and greatly influenced by art history but this mode of working changed. They were now unburdened by art history, free to indulge in uninhibited mark making and joyously centred in the present. To enter this creative realm he abandoned figuration and began making work with the same materials that are found in pre-school environments. He uses pearl clay, glitter, beads, gemstones, coloured thread and wool to make paintings, sculptures, embroidered and crochette works. His printmaking has also incorporated these materials to enliven and enrich.
The artwork is influenced by children's creativity and materials.
