BATHERS ... AND SAILS by Olaug Vethal (1946-2007)
Olaug Vethal (1946-2007) made Malta her home for the last 20 years of her life, before passing away in 2007. During this time, she taught art at De La Salle College Sixth Form as well as privately. In the summer months she took advantage of her free time to paint. She was prolific and among the various themes she painted, bathers was theme she painted most and she painted all en-plein-air (on the spot) and not in her studio. What we have is a magnificent collection of figurative paintings which truly capture the figures as they are, in the heat of our summer months. And it's not just bathers you'd find when looking out of our coastal shores- from her home town in Sliema she also saw quite a few sails which she also painted.
