Zvezdan Reljić is a Serbian-Maltese artist who works primarily in film photography and darkroom printing. He graduated from Graphic Arts School in Belgrade in 1983 with a specialisation in photography reproduction. Along the way he has integrated all the new technologies of digital imaging and pre-press, but always kept close to heart his love for the printer’s craft. Originally from the former Yugoslavia, Reljić sought refuge for his family in Malta in 1992 and has remained here ever since. In this time he has formed an extensive and intimate network of friends from all parts of the globe. During his career he managed several newspapers and magazine design departments and worked as a consultant on numerous publishing projects.
In 2011 he began a series of very raw portraits of friends, titled ‘My Beautiful People’. The project has expanded and evolved, and become highly recognised among people both within the creative community and beyond in Malta. In 2015 Zvezdan was commissioned by the Valletta International Arts Festival to produce portraits as hand printed lith prints of 20 Valletta residents for the exhibition ‘Beltin’ curated by Raphael Vella.
In the same year he also produced 100 hand printed portraits for the breast cancer awareness campaign.
In 2017 he collaborated with UOM dance studies students on the photography exhibition ‘Somna’, which took place at the Malta Postal Museum, Valletta. ‘Somna’ lith prints were on view at MPM in May and June 2017.
In 2018 Zvezdan was working on WIĊĊNA project, an at once intimate and collective compendium of lith-printed photographic portraits. The project, supported by Arts Council Malta, unfolded in two parts, an exhibition at Blitz, Valletta and accompanying book of 240 portraits alongside aesthetic, anthropological and literary essays on aspects of physiognomy, identity and photography, each written in the different languages that have influenced Malta throughout its history – Arabic (Walid Nabhan), English (Alexandra Pace), French (Philippe Parizot), Italian (Virginia Monteforte), Maltese (Leanne Ellul), and Spanish (Antoine Cassar).
Currently Zvezdan holds film photography workshops and darkroom printing in his studio. He is also working on several film photography projects.
