The Myth of the Unicorn by Selina Scerri

The painting ‘ The myth of the unicorn’ by Selina Scerri was painted at the MCA (Malta Contemporary Art) studio in Marsa when she was one of the ten artists selected to work on a project for an exhibition that was to open the Malta Contemporary Art new space at the St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity , Castille Place, Valletta in January 2010.

Selina painted the painting during the three months leading to the exhibition and was inspired by the surroundings of Marsa, of which horses are a common feature.

Departing from reality into a realm of fantasy and spirituality, the artist depicted horses of a caruosel all in pink and of plastic except for one. The main horse is in fact a unicorn, symbolizing marriage love, truth and strength, amongst all the fakes around, coming into the woman's life to save her. It is the right one, amongst a circus act which causes a total upheaval of the present situation bringing the woman back to her real self.
