OLAUG VETHAL (1946-2007)

Of Norwegian nationality, Olaug Vethal came to Malta in 1988, having spent most of her student and adult life in Hamburg, Germany. After one holiday visit to Malta, she decided to return permanently. She was so intrigued by the island and the Maltese people, that she did not waste time in using them as the subjects of her artworks. She was very prolific: the number of artworks that she produced demonstrate this. In addition, she also taught art to A Level students at De La Salle Sixth Form. After twenty years living on the island, Olaug Vethal passed away - leaving behind a legacy of artworks that celebrate the Maltese people, heritage and culture. In February 2008, a retrospective exhibition was organised in her name at the St James Centre of Creativity in Valletta, Malta. This was followed by a similar exhibition in Oslo, Norway, in January 2009 and another, 'Olaug Vethal: Drawings and Prints', at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Malta in 2009 .

1999 Olaug started the notes on drawing, painting and colour, and some was printed as photocopy notes. Recently I have compiled more material with colour illustrations: the material is available on a CD, Olaug compiled one CD with theoretical and illustrative material. Her niece Runa Vethal has found these notes very useful, and was accepted to the College of Design in Oslo in 2004. They accepted only 12 people.
